M7 and Midtown Phoenix Gay Bars - I thought I'd separate out the Melrose on 7th bars since they're all so close together and its as close to a gay neighborhood as Phoenix is gonna get. Melrose is roughly the stretch of 7th Avenue between Camelback and Indian School Roads. The focus being the area just south of Campbell on 7th Avenue. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| M7 Background- In the
50's, Melrose was a pedestrian friendly destination. New home
developments touted proximity to the Melrose shops. Later they put the
suicide lane down the middle of 7th Avenue making it like a freeway. If
you're not familiar with this flawed concept, its the reversible lane
Valley drivers fear and loathe. It changes direction depending on which
way the rush hour traffic is heading. Sounded like a great idea... yeah,
until you run head-on into someone unaware of the time or the rules of
the lane. Anyway, the suicide lane ruined the street. Hopefully the Streetscape Panels project will help revitalize the area. At least until the lane is converted into a beautiful landscaped traffic island. Well, maybe someday. Making M7 Home - If you're looking for a gay neighborhood in Phoenix, Melrose and its surrounding neighborhoods make for a great home. With light rail just around the corner and redevelopment everywhere, I see no other way than up. Gay owned and operated Clarendon Hotel is within a mile, the gay Safeway is just down 7th at Osborn. You never know who you'll bump into there. "Oh, gawd... I think I slept with him." Around the corner from Safeway is the very gay Park Central weekend crowd who frequent Park Central's Starbucks and The Good Egg. As for real parks, don't forget how close the new Steel Indian School park is from M7. My hunch is, that if you're gonna buy, do it before light rail is completed. Hurry, I want more gay neighbors!
